The Duxbury Student Union (DSU) was presented with a $3,600.00 donation from the Duxbury Police Chief, Mark Deluca on May 6. This generous donation couldn’t have come at a better time for the DSU as hard economic times have come along with increases in operating costs. There has been an all-out effort to raise awareness and with it, critically needed funds, and while the DSU has received much support, more is still needed as it prepares for the future. The DSU is located in part of the Wright Building adjacent to the high school, middle school and Percy Walker Pool. The DSU is open four days a week, after school, from 1:50 - 5 o’clock. It provides a safe and supervised place for students from grades 6 through 12 to talk to friends outside of school, go before or after co-curricular activities, or just hang out with fellow classmates and peers. There are rooms for studying, computers available, Guitar Hero to play and a game room. Healthy snacks such as smoothies are available. The DSU is also open for special activities such as coffee houses where musicians get together and play, dances, and other events. The DSU is a valuable and important asset to the town of Duxbury and its students. Although the DSU is supervised by adults for safety reasons, it also allows students some freedom in a less-structured or controlled environment. I took time to ask Chief Deluca a few questions about the Student Union and what he thinks it means to the town. He stressed the importance of a safe place for kids to go after school. When asked what he thought may help to keep the DSU running, he said, “Involving the community, marketing, and showing the public the DSU’s potential and importance will help to keep it open in tough economic times such as these.” I asked what he hoped for the future of the DSU and his response was, “I hope the DSU will stay open forever, for many generations to come. I believe the need for the DSU will grow stronger each year.” The members of the Duxbury Student Union celebrated the generous donation with pasta and cake. On behalf of all the members of the Student Union, I would like to thank the police department, and all who donate money and time to the Duxbury Student Union. Your ongoing support for the future of the Student Union is much needed and greatly appreciated. Respectfully Submitted, Ainsley MacNab Duxbury Middle School
