The Duxbury Student Union teamed with the Duxbury Business Association to offer the Amazing Race, modeled after the popular TV show, encouraging moms, dads and kids to enjoy all that our local businesses had to offer. Participants boarded the trolley with a race card and were tasked to achieve a number of challenges ranging from the easy – enjoying numerous free treats, asking questions at various shops, taking a picture with Santa, and having faces painted at Rock Paper Scissors toy store – to the more challenging – finding the name of the sculpture in front of the Art Complex Museum or introducing oneself to a senior citizen at the Duxbury Senior Center and asking for some words of wisdom. The Amazing Race brought youth and their families to some of Duxbury’s best kept secrets; teens were impressed by the dazzling selection of iPod and iPad cases at Celebrations Etc. and their handcrafted mittens created using recycled sweaters. Everyone enjoyed the match made in heaven with French Memories and Snug Harbor Fish Market teaming to create the ultimate delight of clam chowder in a bread bowl.
When it was all said and done, Amazing Race participants reported their favorite challenge was also their most difficult one, at the Senior Center. It was a bit intimidating to think about talking to someone they didn’t know, but once the ice was broken, they truly enjoyed the connection. The most poignant advice shared was simple: “Do right”, “always be kind” and, ironically for these racers, “slow down and enjoy the journey”.
In addition to the Amazing Race, DSU was abuzz with music by The Pecan Sandies (Amber Anderson and Tristan Cary) and acoustic guitarists Sarah and Wes Horton. Families also enjoyed cider and cookies, hayrides by O’Connor Landscaping, hand made crafts by Girl Scout Troop #, and impressive balloon creations by Lou the BalLOUnist.
Thank you to all of our local businesses for making Duxbury a great place to live and shop.
