Dear DSU Members and Friends,
How can we measure success? At the DSU, financial stability is critical but more importantly, is how we achieve our mission to engage and empower our young people. It could be viewed as what comes first, the chicken or the egg. I believe if we provide engaging and empowering programs, youth will be involved and financial stability will come. This past week showcased the breadth of interests of Duxbury youth, from Alden through High School with exciting results.
The DSU hosted two days of Fist Full of Fun camp. Sandy, Joyce and Rob made sure it was eggstraordinary and 24 Alden friends had a blast each day dyeing eggs, designing eggs and participating in a long distance egg toss. Grace and Trent were great sports wearing a 40 yard splat...DSU t-shirts to the rescue!

The 8th grade Blackout dance was a huge success. So much so, the event was sold out in 15 minutes and unfortunately some students were turned away. Lesson learned; buy your ticket ahead of time. DJ Tristan and his crew did an amazing job with dance mixes and lighting. Special thanks to High School Seniors, Nate Files and Roman Perry for doing a surprise DJ & Lighting set to finish out the evening - it was a huge treat and everyone left pumped!

On Saturday, the DSU became Election Headquarters. Eight students from middle school and high school went on a fact finding mission to learn about the candidate's campaigns, the hot issues and the strategies implemented to get residents to vote. They talked with the candidates, the volunteers, the voters and reviewed all communications channels. Despite their inability to vote, they implemented a ground swell of their own, sending texts, emails and Facebook status updates to encourage friends to get their parents to vote. As they discovered, every single vote counted and they were excited when parents texted them back to say they had voted or were on their way.
Perhaps the biggest aha moment for our youth; understanding the commitment, courage and most importantly, expertise required of a candidate seeking election. Behind every candidate is a passionate group of volunteers (and understanding family members) working around the clock to get their message out and mobilizing residents to vote. Triumph and disappointment came at 8.10pm Saturday night. Campaigns were over but the issues remain in the forefront. I am reenergized and reminded of why it is great to live in Duxbury. Now for those elected, they have a responsibility to the town of Duxbury to uphold their obligations..... perhaps, the ultimate measure of success!
It's a new day in Duxbury and with the commitment of the entire community working together, we can engage, empower and educate our youth to be successful in the 21st century.
Enjoy the holiday weekend!
Cheers,
P.S. Never underestimate the power of our youth. In just four hours, they collected data and predicted the outcomes of the elections with 100% accuracy. Josh Cutler, State Rep candidate stopped by the DSU and recruited them to work on his election campaign in November. Stay tuned for more election updates. _________________________________________________
