Dear DSU Members and Friends,
Welcome back! We hope you had a restful and rejuvenating break. We heard stories of vacations in Florida, Washington D.C., lots of college tours and many enjoying the glorious weather at home.
Every week, the DSU newsletter focuses on programs, events and happenings for youth of all ages. We also sprinkle in some parent resources to help better understand and proactively manage the world our children are growing up in.
Tomorrow (Wednesday, April 28), The Parent Connection in collaboration with DHS offers a free, must see, "eyes wide open" presentation on teen drinking. Kathi Meyer will share the poignant story of her daughter Taylor, whom she lost to a senseless, tragic drinking episode with her friends 18 months ago. She will discuss the numerous warning signs that were overlooked that ultimately lead to her daughter's death. Every high school student will attend this presentation during the day and at 7:30pm (7pm reception) at the PAC, Kathi will share her story again. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend. DMS students with their parents are welcome too. This evening not only shares the heart wrenching story of losing a child but also the legal implications as a parent, tax payer and home owner. Your attendance at this event is essential to understanding personal and community responsibilities to teen safety. Please share the event with your friends and let's show our commitment by making it a standing room only at the PAC on Wednesday night.

In other news, I joined Maddy Clark, Harmony for Haiti Chair for an impromptu visit to Partners In Health in Boston last Thursday to present a check for $1738. We toured their office, and a make shift space in a storeroom for 30 staff members, hired specifically for the Haiti earthquake recovery efforts. It was a command central of sorts, managing airplane arrivals and departures, medical supplies, staff, donations, rebuilding plans, data collection and communications. Our visit cemented our commitment to Partners In Health. Clearly with 20 years of experience and over 4,400 Haitian medical personnel already in place in Haiti, their response to the disaster has been immediate and is ongoing. Please see their 3 month report of the work done so far and their commitment to "building back better" in Haiti. Maddy and Christina Auer are in the planning stages of hosting their second Harmony for Haiti event, H4H - 2 with an outdoor concert in July. Stay tuned for more details.
May is another action packed month with special projects to celebrate Mother's Day, Fist Full of Fun camp, FBDO, Freaky Friday and open house events for grades 2nd through high school. See below for upcoming dates.
Cheers,
